The story behind the design

Wildflower Garden

There was once a very small kitchen at the back of a very old house, and outside its window the garden was doing its level best to climb in. Pea vines scrambled up the bricks, pumpkins sprawled like plump orange cats at the doorstep, and the corn stood politely in rows, listening to the bees.

On most days, the table inside wore only its plain wooden face—quite decent, but a little solemn. The teapot steamed, the bread was sliced, and the soup hummed a quiet song in its bowl, yet something of the garden’s jolly muddle was missing. The radishes, who were naturally curious, whispered among themselves that there ought to be a way in.

One afternoon, when the sun had turned low and syrupy, the gardener laid out a curious new cloth upon the table. It was not a cloth at all, but a placemat—stiff enough to stay where it was put, yet soft enough to fold if it grew shy. To everyone’s astonishment (and vegetables are very easily astonished), there upon its dark ground were all the old friends: corn with bright kernels, round and drowsy pumpkins, ferns uncurling like green fiddleheads, and peas dangling in their pods, pretending to be lanterns.

“Now we can see properly what goes on indoors,” said the peas, who had never been invited to supper before. The pumpkins nodded with great satisfaction, for they liked nothing better than being ornamental. Even the beetles and the little brown mouse, who had no business in the house at all, felt they had been included in something very grand.

From that day, every ordinary meal grew a little less ordinary. Sandwiches sat up straighter on their plates, tea tasted more like autumn, and letters written at that table were sprinkled—quite accidentally—with better ideas. When guests came, they always reached out a hand to smooth the garden scene, as though expecting the leaves to rustle.

And so the placemat lived halfway between indoors and out, keeping the table safe from spills and the stories safe from vanishing. The gardener, who had dirt on her knees and ink on her fingers, thought it a very good arrangement indeed: the garden on the table, the table in the garden, and supper right in the middle of it all.
